Emerging Technology in Language Learning

As in other areas of life, technology evolves at a breakneck pace, and today's innovations can become yesterday's memories. Technology, on the other hand, is here to stay, and teachers and schools are gaining more experience and expertise in the use of technology in language teaching. Teachers are discovering novel ways to use technology to improve both their own teaching and the learning opportunities available to their students. In doing so, they are discovering new ways to use technology not as a gimmick or novelty, but as a resource to support the teaching of all aspects of language, as well as for assessment and evaluation.

As the nature of classroom language learning changes, new roles for teachers and learners emerge. Rather than being defined by the content of the textbook and the activities and materials chosen for teaching by the teacher, online and technology-supported learning provides limitless opportunities for new modes of learning – learning that draws on multiple modalities and takes learners outside of the classroom and into a world without walls. Changes in how people learn necessitate changes in how teachers teach and schools operate. However, in order for technology to be used effectively, investment is required not only in the technology itself and the means that schools must provide for it to function effectively, but also in the training and support that teachers require in order to make the best uses of technology in language teaching.

When web 2.0 tools are used in a collaborative learning environment, promoting learning autonomy and socialization through blogs, wikis, and online discussions, technology helps students acquire knowledge and fluency in a foreign language. (Pellet, 2012) Students may use technology to review phonetics that are specific to a foreign language. One of the primary benefits of using videos, audio, multimedia, and mobile-based technology when learning a foreign language is the ability to play and repeat phonetics as many times as necessary to master pronunciation and listening comprehension. Furthermore, when appropriate software is provided, students can record their own voices and compare their pronunciation and fluency to that provided by language teachers.

The emerging technology for language learning nowadays is really important. There are a lot of facilities we can use to enhance the quality of language learning, basically the role of technology brings the huge impacts. Language learning through technology is really easy to use and more interactive for students, especially the advantage is we can use it everywhere and every time, not require to conduct the learning activities in one place at a time. The choices of using technology on language learning are vary. Students can choose which way they can comprehend the lesson better, for example by hearing podcast, watching videos on online media platforms, doing puzzle on websites, doing online games, etc.

While technology can help with ear training and fluency in a foreign language, social interaction is also required to provide opportunities for verbal communication practice. As a result, incorporating technology into a foreign language curriculum, in addition to the social interactions that occur in existing face-to-face foreign language classrooms, may be one of the best resources for foreign language students and teachers.

In CALL class, we learned how to use Flipgrid.

Flipgrid is a website and app that enables teachers to lead video discussions. Students are divided into groups and then given discussion topics. The topic space functions as an interactive message board where teachers can ask questions and students can respond with video responses that are displayed in a tiled grid display. Guests can also be invited to participate by sending them a link and a password. Customizable security settings aid in the protection of student privacy. Text, stickers, screen recording, and other possibilities are made possible by a variety of filters and tools. Students can also view closed captioning and translations via the immersive reading feature.

Users can participate on Flipgrid using any camera-enabled device or by uploading a previously recorded video via the app or the website. Response times can range from 15 seconds to 10 minutes, and teachers can set a maximum recording time. Teachers can also allow students to record responses to the responses of their classmates. You can enable or disable various moderation features based on the topic. The CoPilot feature allows multiple teachers to serve as group moderators. Teachers have access to a help center as well as two active teacher communities: Discovery Library for sharing topic templates and GridPals for connecting with educators and classrooms worldwide. It should be noted that some users have reported difficulties uploading videos via the Android app.

One of the best features of Flipgrid is the ability to interact via video, similar to face-to-face interactions in the real world, but without the pressure of a live classroom. Because students are given the space and time to respond when they are ready, educational engagement is possible for even the most anxious students who might otherwise feel excluded in class.

The ability to incorporate rich media encourages students to be creative and, perhaps more importantly, expressive. Students can interact with class content in the same way they interact with friends on social media platforms by adding emoji, text, and stickers.
